Protest in Gran Couva over roads and landslips

Residents of Pepper Village, Tabaquite staged a protest today to highlight deplorable road conditions and dangerous landslips.

Speaking on the matter, Councillor Ryan Rampersad says something must be done at the site of the protest, where a landslip has limited access since 2022.

Meanwhile, MP Anita Haynes Alleyne says the action followed multiple unsuccessful requests to the Ministry to address the issues.

She says there has been no update on fixing multiple areas along the Gran Couva Main Road.

She says proper restoration works are also long overdue in Brasso Venado, Los Atajos, Caratal, Corosal, Guaracara, Parforce, Tortuga, Mamoral, San Fabien and more.

The Tabaquite MP emphasizes that there are significant consequences due to the dilapidated infrastructure, “These road hazards limit connectivity as well as access to critical services such as garbage collection, postal delivery, emergency health responses and more. There is also an incredible financial burden as vehicles are enduring extreme wear, tear and damage. Homes are at risk as walls crack and foundations shift. Commuters often miss work and school especially when road conditions worsen in the rain. The mental and emotional weight of regularly traversing along unsafe roads must also be considered. I am urging the MOWT to review these matters with urgency and, at the very least, indicate when repair work can be expected.”
