MoE: 97% of teachers have received backpay

The Education Ministry says 97% of teachers have received their backpay, with efforts continuing to pay the remainder.

Today, the Ministry met with TTUTA to address concerns raised about outstanding payments to active members and an update on when payments will be made to retired teachers

It says Permanent Secretary Jacqueline Charles assured that considerable progress has been made, with 12,467 teachers already receiving their backpay as of January 12th 2024.

This is said to be inclusive of 923 teachers who received their arrears outside of the December 19th 2023 salary.

The Ministry adds that another 1,357 teachers will receive backpay with their January salaries.

The Permanent Secretary also assured that processing of payments to retirees will begin when payments to active teachers are completed.

TTUTA President Martin Lum Kin and his executive have reportedly welcomed the developments, while also requesting a higher frequency of updates from the Ministry on its progress.

The meeting comes one day after TTUTA issued a statement complaining about a lack of response from the Ministry on the matter.
