MoH notes cluster of respiratory illnesses in China

The Health Ministry has taken note of reports regarding a cluster of respiratory illnesses in children in Northern China.

It says the WHO has stated that the reports emerged on November 21st, though it is unclear if these are separate events or associated with the overall increase in respiratory infections previously reported by Chinese authorities.

On November 22nd, the WHO reportedly requested additional epidemiologic and clinical information, as well as lab results from the reported clusters.

According to BBC News, Chinese authorities have attributed a spike in flu-like illnesses this winter to the lifting of Covid measures.

The Ministry says it will continue to monitor the situation and update the population as it becomes necessary.

It is also reminding that T&T is in the midst of the Influenza season, which runs from October 2023 to May 2024.

It is urging persons to get their flu shot, and to practice of good hygiene in order to lower the chances of transmitting infectious diseases.

Some of these practices include:

  • Washing hands regularly with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizers (containing at least 70% alcohol).
  • Regular cleaning and sanitising of high touch surfaces (e.g. door knobs, countertops, desks).
  • Avoid sharing personal items like utensils, water bottles, towels and wash rags with others.
  • Avoid touching your face and eyes with unclean hands.
  • Avoid close contact with persons who display symptoms of infectious viruses.
  • Stay home if you are ill.
