MP calls for JSC meeting over Electronic Monitoring Unit

A UNC MP is calling for an emergency session of Parliament’s Joint Select Committee on National Security to address the disappearance of the first person convicted under the Trafficking in Persons Act.

Last week, it was confirmed that Anthony Michael Smith was found guilty of five charges and given 15 years in jail for each count.

However, Smith was last seen in September 2023 – he disappeared despite being tracked under the Electronic Monitoring Programme.

At a media briefing on Sunday, UNC MP Saddam Hosein raised claims that the Electronic Monitoring Unit has had staffing and resources issues.

He said the Unit, National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds, and the Police Commissioner must answer questions regarding the matter at the JSC.
