Residents in Couva walked from Roop’s Junction to T&TEC’s Central Office today to protest the suggested increases in electricity rates.
The demonstration started around 7am and residents were accompanied by Couva South MP Rudranath Indarsingh.
Coordinator for the demonstration Sharma Sooknanan told 103.1FM News that the move to increase rate comes at a difficult time.
He noted that the poor and vulnerable will be among the most impacted by higher light bills.
The Regulated Industries Commission revealed its final determination on proposed increases last month, noting that they are in keeping with the 15% to 64% increases outlined in its previous draft document.
The new rates and a monthly billing frequency will become effective once notice is officially given by T&TEC.
T&TEC is required to give at least 21 days’ notice before the implementation of any rate changes.
