MP slams electricity rate increase

Princes Town MP Barry Padarath is calling on T&TEC to hold its hand on accepting and instituting the new electricity rates.

In a statement, the MP slammed the increases, saying citizens are being saddled with paying off T&TEC’s debt which the Government has failed to manage properly.

He adds that this morning’s presentation by the R.I.C. left the population with a lot more questions than answers, with the tiered system not properly articulated and believes “… at many times, both the executive director and the Chairman seemed confused.”

Mr Padarath maintains that citizens cannot bear any additional financial burdens and questioned how many are going to pay the higher rates.

He believes as well that the rate increase is due to Government’s inability to generate new revenue streams, as he accused them of going back to a “strategy of taxes and increases across the board.”
