Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness has announced a programme aimed at ridding communities of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
The Jamaica Observer reports that the island is in the midst of a dengue outbreak with the number of presumed, suspected and confirmed cases at 1,117 as of September 29th, 2023.
The first part of the new programme will focus on the clean-up of schools by the National Solid Waste Management Authority.
Meanwhile, money will also be given to the country’s 63 constituencies to allow MPs to lead community clean-up campaigns with focus on bulky waste and other mosquito breeding sites.
According to the Observer, this programme will compliment another announced in Parliament last week by Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton.
