A 3-year-old girl has died after being burnt by a pot of boiling lentils.

Police say that around 4:15pm on September 20th, 2023 young Shazade Simon was taken by her mother to her father’s vending stall in Williamsville.

At the time, he was boiling a pot of lentils on a ring stove on the floor.

According to police, the woman left to use the washroom leaving the child in the company of her grandfather and, on her return, she noticed the child seated in the pot.

The child was taken out and placed into a bucket of water before being taken to hospital where she was treated for 2nd degree burns to her buttocks and stomach, covering 25% of her body.

At 1:30pm on September 25th, officers of the Child Protection Unit were informed that Shazade had passed away.

Meanwhile, the family, according to the T&T Newsday, is refuting reports that the child fell into the pot of lentils and instead says the pot overturned and the contents burned the child.

The family also denies that negligence resulted in the death.
