The Opposition Leader and the Prime Minister have both reacted to the President’s call for collaboration to address crime.
Yesterday during the ceremonial reopening of Parliament, President Christine Kangaloo suggested five areas of focus for members in both houses.
At the top of the list was crime.
President Kangaloo also defended the work of Parliamentarians, insisting that the work they do is fundamental to the well-being of society, but still under-appreciated.
The President’s speech however was criticized by Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
Speaking to members of the media after the ceremonial reopening, she said while Ms Kangaloo was in the Senate for years as President, no attempt was made to implement her suggestions.
Mrs Persad-Bissessar also maintained that her side has consistently called for collaboration, but got little to no cooperation from the Government.
Also speaking to reporters was Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, who in turn believes the Opposition must put country first.
Dr Rowley also insisted that while he would like collaboration to address crime, he believes some MPs are not prepared to see beyond their prospects in the next election.
