Japan complains of “abusive” phone calls over Fukushima water release

Japan has complained to China over abusive phone calls to local businesses about the Fukushima plant’s release of treated wastewater.

More than a million tonnes of water, accumulating at the nuclear plant since it was damaged by a tsunami in 2011, will be discharged over the next 30 years.

The plan, which Japan says is safe and has been approved by the UN’s nuclear watchdog, has drawn criticism from other who believe the release should be stopped.

BBC News says “Beijing has led criticism of last week’s release of treated wastewater.”

Now, businesses in Japan are reportedly being inundated with calls by people with Chinese dialling codes who speak about their opposition to the release.

Calls have been made to government departments, schools and even an aquarium.
