Guyana VP defends currency after Dr. Rowley’s remarks

The vice president of Guyana took issue with an off-the-cuff remark made by Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley about the apparent worth of Guyanese Dollars

In the aftermath of last Monday’s local elections, Dr. Rowley responded to a claim that the NTA got some 30 thousand votes in Diego Martin.

Dr. Rowley quickly responded, by saying it must have been in ‘Guyanese dollars’, which provoked laughter from within other PNM members.

Guyana’s VP Bharat Jagdeo, in a media conference last week, defended his country’s currency, saying it was not an indicator of his country’s economic strength.

He drew reference to Japan’s disparity from the US dollar despite being one of the top economies in the world.

Mr. Jagdeo also claimed that T&T businesses are using foreign currency in Guyana to pay for their goods because of a forex shortage in T&T.
