PM turns attention to LG reform; UNC to request recounts

The Local Government Election has ended with the PNM and UNC splitting the 14 municipalities 7-7 based on preliminary figures.

Speaking last night at Balisier House, PNM Leader Dr Keith Rowley stated that his party retained its seven municipal corporations.

He said attention now turns to the next General Election and the work ahead of it, including local government reform, which he said needs the cooperation of all municipalities.

Also speaking last night was UNC Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar who said her party made strong inroads in PNM held areas and will request recounts.

Mrs Persad-Bissessar also revealed that the party’s lawyers will be looking into alleged election irregularities.

Meanwhile, Progressive Empowerment Party Political Leader Phillip Alexander spoke last night about his party’s experience at the polls.

He says it has primed them to make an impact in the next General Election.

The NTA is accusing the leader of another political party of possibly breaching Election Day restrictions.

In a statement, the NTA said there were Facebook posts with campaign material, as well as a post advising persons how to “spoil their ballot”.

The party says it has written to the relevant authorities to seek their guidance in these matters.
