Michael Oher, whose life inspired “The Blind Side”, petitions court

Retired NFL star Michael Oher has petitioned a Tennessee court with allegations that he was used to enrich the persons who claimed to have adopted him.

Oher’s story was immortalized in the 2009 movie “The Blind Side” starring Sandra Bullock.

The movie’s plot revolves around the Tuohy family which adopted Oher, a poor, virtually homeless and academically challenged Black teenager.

In the movie, they helped him catch up in school, taught him the basics of football and how to harness his athleticism, putting him on the road to sports stardom.

However, a 14-page petition filed in Shelby County, Tennessee, alleges that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy never adopted him.

Instead, it claims that less than three months after Oher turned 18 in 2004, the couple tricked him into signing a document making them his conservators, which gave them legal authority to make business deals in his name.

According to ESPN, Oher’s lawyer says “Mike’s relationship with the Tuohy family started to decline when he discovered that he was portrayed in the movie as unintelligent. Their relationship continued to deteriorate as he learned that he was the only member of the family not receiving royalty checks from the movie, and it was permanently fractured when he realized he wasn’t adopted and a part of the family.”

Oher’s lawyer also explained Oher’s delay in addressing the matter, saying the film’s success coincided with the start of his lucrative NFL career in 2009, and so, he did not take the time to fully investigate the deal until after he retired in 2016.

“The Blind Side” grossed over $300 million.

It received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Picture, while Sandra Bullock won the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Needless to say, many fans of the film are disappointed and left comments on ESPN’s article:
