The indigenous couple at the centre of Oscar-winning documentary Elephant Whisperers have sued the film’s makers alleging mistreatment.
The documentary tells the story of Bomman and Bellie who care for an orphaned and injured baby elephant in the Mudumulai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu.
After the film’s success, the couple were celebrated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who presented them with a cheque US$1,207 each.
But, according to BBC News, the couple has now sued the film’s director Kartiki Gonsalves and Sikhya Entertainment, alleging that they were not compensated properly for their participation in the documentary.
The filmmakers have denied the allegations and said they have deep respect for all contributors of the story.
The couple is asking for 20 million rupees.
