Let’s have a Divali free of fireworks

We commend the National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC)’s decision to celebrate Divali from November 3 to 11 and take this opportunity to request its support in further promoting a fireworks-free celebration.

The Fireworks Action Coalition of TT (FACTT) extends our sincere appreciation to the NCIC for its proactive efforts in 2022 in making TT a safer and more peaceful place by recognising the harmful impact of fireworks and refraining from hosting a fireworks display.

We salute the NCIC for taking this responsible and compassionate stance in organising a celebration that embraces the values of peace and harmony. However, we express our concern regarding the continued sale of fireworks at the Divali Nagar. By refraining from hosting fireworks displays or facilitating the sale of fireworks, the NCIC will set an admirable and compassionate example for all corporate and private citizens.

FACTT issues an earnest plea to the public and relevant authorities ahead of the upcoming Divali celebrations to foster a safer and more peaceful environment for all citizens.

Fireworks, without a doubt, cause immense suffering and harm to various forms of life, including animals and birds, who are unable to comprehend or protect themselves from the sudden bursts of loud noise and bright lights and we urge the NCIC to reconsider permitting fireworks sales at the Divali Nagar.

Such a step aligns with the forward-thinking approach of the NCIC and further enhances the positive impact of its initiatives. By embracing a more enlightened and peaceful celebration of light over darkness at the Divali Nagar, the NCIC showcases its commitment to a more compassionate and harmonious world.

We at FACTT believe that Divali can be celebrated with joy and fervour while also promoting the values of compassion, empathy and non-violence towards all living beings. We kindly request the NCIC’s continued support in advocating for a firework-free Divali, which will undoubtedly inspire other communities to follow suit.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to the positive impact that your continued efforts will have on the well-being of our society.
