King Charles opens Canada’s Parliament with Throne Speech

King Charles has given the throne speech to open the 45th session of Canada’s parliament in Ottawa.

In his speech, the King said Canada must be “strong and free” adding that the government “will unleash a new era of growth that will ensure it does not survive ongoing trade wars, but emerge from them stronger than ever”.

He also spoke about the changing world that calls for new alliances and relationships, noting that Canada’s relationship with the US was changing and its place in the world was growing, including alliances with European nations.

The Throne Speech is read on behalf of the prime minister and sets out the government’s agenda when a new parliamentary session is about to begin.

The last time the monarch gave the speech was in 1977, which was done by Queen Elizabeth II.
