Taxi Drivers Network calls for revision of Demerit Points System

The T&T Taxi Drivers Network believes the Demerit Points System should be revised instead of scrapped.

Speaking with 103.1FM News today, Network President Adrian Acosta said reckless drivers must face the consequences of their actions.

He believes there should be points for driving dangerously, breaking a red light, driving under the influence and speeding.

However, he said points for minor infractions such as blown bulbs, cracked windscreens and smooth tyres are unfair and should be removed.

He also pointed out that these smaller offences already do and should continue to carry fines.

Mr Acosta meanwhile is recommending incentives as a way to foster better driving practices in T&T.

He says such measures are being used elsewhere in the world and can include rewards for drivers with clean records.

The Network has long called for a review of the Demerit Points System – last year members stood outside the Ministry of Works and Transport’s Head Office, seeking to draw attention to their concerns.

The Government recently stated its intention to scrap the system altogether.
