DMUs continuing to monitor, respond to situations as they arise

Disaster Management Units at the Municipal Corporations are continuing to monitor and respond to situations as they arise, following yesterday’s rain and flooding.

At this time, water levels in Caroni remain high and Local Government Minister Khadijah Ameen is urging residents to stay vigilant and report any flood related issues directly to their DMUs.

She has also issued a call for volunteers with equipment to coordinate with their councillors to assist in clearing watercourses.

According to the Minister, the current flood mitigation programme focuses on immediate short-term relief, while medium and long term plans are in place to restore riverbanks, repair floodgates, and ensure all pumps are fully functional with standby units.

All Municipal Corporations also have sandbags in stock and persons are being urged to collect these early to protect their homes and properties.
