“Don’t Click the Link” – this message is being emphasized by the Fraud Squad due to a sharp increase in schemes targeting financial accounts.
These crimes are commonly carried out by fraudsters who send emails or SMS messages claiming an urgent issue with the recipient’s bank account.
Victims are instructed to click on a link to resolve the matter, but once they do so, the perpetrators gain unauthorized access to personal financial information, resulting in the theft or illegal transfer of funds.
The Fraud Squad says persons should exercise extreme caution and avoid clicking on any links received via e-mail or text message.
They are instead advised to contact their bank or financial institution directly if they receive any communication about their account.
