The Indian government says it has launched an attack on nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
Relations between India and Pakistan have declined sharply following a deadly militant attack on tourists in Kashmir last month.
Indian police claimed two of the attackers were Pakistani citizens, however Pakistan has denied any involvement.
Regarding today’s strikes, the Indian government says its forces have launched “Operation Sindoor”, “hitting terrorist infrastructure” from where “terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed”.
It added, “Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution.”
Pakistan however has vowed to respond.
BBC News says a spokesperson for Pakistan’s military says Islamabad “will respond to this [attack] at a time and place of its choosing.
It also condemned the attack as “shameful and cowardly”.
