Former Member of Parliament, Government Minister and Historian Brinsley Samaroo has passed away, aged 84, according to multiple reports.
He had been ailing recently, and it had been reported he was hospitalized for the past few days.
Mr. Samaroo had been the MP for Nariva under the NAR government in the late 80s and served in that administration as well, in addition serving as an Opposition Senator prior to this.
He also spent many years as a History Professor at the UWI St. Augustine Campus and was Professor Emeritus.
Many have been paying tribute online, including Chanka Seetaram, President of the Hindi Foundation of T&T Inc who stated, “As a member and friend of the Hindi Foundation, Professor Samaroo demonstrated unparalleled kindness, support, and mentorship.”
“Professor Samaroo’s scholarly expertise and relentless dedication to preserving the stories and traditions of our ancestors have not only elevated the academic discourse but have also empowered countless individuals to embrace their heritage with pride and enlightened perspectives.” he added.
