The Vatican has said that Pope Francis died at the age of 88.
In a statement it said “At 7:35 this morning (local time), the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.”
Cardinal Farrell also said in the satement “He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
Mourners are gathering in St. Peter’s Square, while followers worldwide including world leaders, are paying tribute.
He appeared at St. Peter’s Square on Sunday to wish thousands of worshippers present a Happy Easter.
Francis, the first Latin American to lead the Roman Catholic Church, was recently discharged from hospital after five weeks of treatment for an infection.
His death now sets in motion the centuries-old process of electing a new Pope.
Some 138 Catholic cardinals will vote for a successor in an election known as a conclave, which is held in secret inside the Sistine Chapel.
