In a landmark ruling, the UK Supreme Court has ruled that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex.
BBC News said judges noted the “concept of sex is binary”, adding that transgender people still have legal protection from discrimination.
The decision came following a lengthy legal case between the Scottish government and the women’s rights group For Women Scotland, regarding equalities legislation.
The Scottish government argued that transgender people with a gender recognition certificate are entitled to sex-based protections, while For Women Scotland argued they only apply to people that are born female.
