“War budget” to fight worsening security crisis in Haiti

Haiti’s government has approved a US$275,000 “war budget” to help the police and military in their fight against the escalating security crisis in the country.

In a statement yesterday, the Haitian Transitional Presidential Council said it has approved the funding to fight the armed groups that threaten national stability.

It added that nearly 20% will go towards fortifying the border with the Dominican Republic and other social programmes such as education, health and humanitarian assistance.

Last week, the International Organisation for Migration said armed attacks in the past few weeks have displaced more than 30,000 people in Haiti.
