Mark Carney sworn in as Canada’s new PM

Mark Carney has been sworn in as Canada’s new Prime Minister.

It comes after Justin Trudeau officially handed in his resignation earlier this morning, and thanked Canadians for trusting and challenging him.

All eyes will now be on Mr Carney to see if he calls a snap federal election, which is currently scheduled for October.

Mark Carney is a former governor of the Bank of Canada and the first non-British person to become governor of the Bank of England.

BBC News adds that unlike most PM-hopefuls, Mr Carney has never held political office before winning the battle to replace Justin Trudeau.

He is now tasked with leading Canada through one of its toughest challenges yet – an escalating trade war with its biggest trading partner, the United States.

In a post shared on his official Facebook page Mr Carney said, “Today, we’re building a government that meets the moment. Canadians expect action — and that’s what this team will deliver. A smaller, experienced cabinet that moves faster, secures our economy, and protects Canada’s future.”
