Jamaican gov’t monitoring US deportation situation

Jamaica’s government says it is monitoring the situation in the United States regarding intensified deportations.

Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith said public concerns about the situation have been heightened by exaggerated claims that 10,000s of Jamaicans are set to be immediately deported.

Meanwhile, the Minister also dismissed claims that a deportation flight from the US yesterday was the first one sent back under the new deportation plan by the Trump Administration.

She noted that it was part of a regular monthly arrangement in place before President Trump’s new plan.

Grenada’s government has also commented on the deportation plans, noting that it is yet to receive notification from the US government on Grenadians awaiting or preparing for deportation.

However, the Office of the Prime Minister assured that the country has a mechanism in place to receive deportees.
