A man has been given the life sentence for the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in India.
Sanjoy Roy, a hospital volunteer, was convicted over the weekend and a judge said he would spend the rest of his life in jail.
Roy has maintained he is innocent and is expected to appeal the verdict in a higher court.
The doctor’s murder, which occurred last year, sent shockwaves across the country, prompting protests and concerns over the safety of healthcare workers in India, especially women.
