Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as leader of Canada’s governing party and as Prime Minister of Canada.
Speaking at a news conference today, Mr Trudeau explained that he will stay on as PM until a new Liberal Party leader is chosen.
He said it has become clear that if he has to fight “internal battles”, he cannot be the best option on the ballot.
He added that Canada “deserves a real choice” at the next election.
Mr Trudeau also noted that Parliament has been “paralysed for months”, adding that the House will be prorogued until March 24th 2025.
Mr. Trudeau had been under recent pressure to step down.
This followed the resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in December – she reportedly resigned after pushing back against his proposals for more spending.
Mr Trudeau has been Prime Minister of Canada since November 2015.
