The current Bill to amend the Pension & Public Assistance Acts will be withdrawn by the Government.
This announcement came today during a media conference involving Social Development Minister Donna Cox and Attorney General Reginald Armour.
There has been public backlash for a particular amendment, which meant that elderly persons with savings over $25,000 would not be eligible for senior citizens’ pension.
Ms Cox said there was never any intention to have a savings requirement.
Meanwhile Mr Armour insisted that the decision to withdraw the changes was not done because of public backlash.
He adds that the Bill will be adjusted accordingly.
