Project starts in Tobago to help “near threatened” hummingbird species

A project has started aimed at protecting the white-tailed sabrewing hummingbird in Tobago.

According to the EMA, this species of hummingbird is classified as “near threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and is facing a decline in population.

As such, a bird banding workshop was hosted in Tobago to equip organizations, foresters and conservationists with skills in bird band which involves safely capturing birds and attaching bands to study their movements.

Over the next 12 months, participants will continue training after the establishment of long-term banding stations within the Main Ridge Forest Reserve.
