The Institute of Marine Affairs says a Level 5 Bleaching Alert is in place for Tobago’s coral reefs.
In a statement, it says this is the highest level of concern as key sites like Buccoo Reef, Castara, Culloden and Mount Irvine have over 80% coral bleaching.
Some critical species are showing up to 95-100% impact due to record-breaking sea temperatures since August 2024.
Today, the IMA will be hosting a community event to discuss the status of the mass coral bleaching event at the Buccoo Community Centre from 4pm.
