Couva North MP Ravi Ratiram is criticizing what he says is Government’s inaction to address significant challenges facing the fishing community.
According to the MP, these range from piracy on the high seas to poor infrastructure at fish landing sites in Brickfield, Carli Bay and other areas.
He also pointed to the impact of rising fuel costs, which he says has impacted profit margins, operating expenses, their ability to pay workers, and their ability to sustain their families.
He has since renewed his call for the government to revise and update the fuel rebate for fishermen.
Mr Ratiram’s statement comes on World Fisheries Day today.
