The Joint Chambers are calling on the Government to “urgently take whatever action necessary” to resolve the industrial action currently impacting operations at the Port of Port of Spain.
In a statement, the Chambers say a lack of affirmative action is leading to a national crisis, at a time when the volume of shipments is typically at its highest.
They add that extensive delays are negatively affecting port revenue and vessel by passes, while also resulting in increased detention fees and haulage rates.
It also noted a particular trend saying, “… we have observed a trend of industrial action leading to port disruption on Wednesdays, the day immediately prior to re-stocking at the Port, which occurs on Thursdays and Fridays. This has the effect of exacerbating an already unsustainable situation that is crippling businesses of all sizes and delaying delivery of Christmas inventory.”
The Chambers warn that citizens will ultimately be severely impacted and are urging swift, decisive and comprehensive action.
