A former police commissioner is taking issue with the approach by the head of the TTPS Social and Welfare Association regarding officers carrying guns to court.
Since 2015, the Judiciary told its various stakeholders that court users and TTPS officers are prohibited from entering the premises with a firearm.
But according to a report by TV6 News, Association President Gideon Dickson questioned the policy of officers being unarmed, when it is at the court that “criminals are assembling.”
He reportedly urged officers to return to their stations if they attempt to attend court and are told they cannot have their firearm.
In a media release, former Police Commissioner Gary Griffith says the association has a justified concern, but he believes Mr Dickson’s approach will do little to help.
Mr Griffith adds that the restriction on firearms in courtrooms must remain and be respected by the TTPS, but there must be dialogue, flexibility and understanding of concerns by both parties.
