Cumuto/Manzanilla MP Dr. Rai Ragbir is calling for focus on men’s mental health in the month of November.
In some countries around the world, November – often dubbed Movember – is used to raise awareness of health issues affecting men.
Dr. Ragbir says mental health is a critical issue with stigmas that must be confronted.
He believes in the Caribbean, mental health is often overlooked, particularly among men, who may feel societal pressure to appear “strong” and stoic.
He adds that this can lead to an alarming rise in untreated mental health conditions and even severe consequences such as an increased risk of violence and crime.
According to Dr. Ragbir, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) reports that mental health disorders affect approximately 12% of the Caribbean population, with men more likely to underreport their struggles and less likely to seek help.
He is calling for persons and entities to work together to create an environment where men feel comfortable discussing their mental health, and encouraging open dialogue about feelings and emotional struggles can save lives and contribute to a healthier society.
