Spain’s King and Queen were pelted with mud by a crowd of enraged flood survivors.
The incident occurred on Sunday in the town of Paiporta, as the Spanish royal couple paid their first visit to the epicenter of the country’s deadliest natural disaster in living memory.
According to The Associated Press, two bodyguards were treated for injuries.
Officials also rushed Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez from the scene soon after his contingent started to walk the mud–covered streets of one of the hardest–hit areas
AP’s report says, “Spanish fury has been unleashed against a state that appears overwhelmed and unable to meet the needs of people used to living under an effective government.”
The disaster killed at least 205 people in eastern Spain.
