Naparima MP Rodney Charles says the time has come for definitive action to deal with fake licence plates.

In a statement, he commended Transport Commissioner Clive Clarke for his recent attempts regarding the issue, but believes it has “long suffered on the altar of inaction.”

He says countries such as the US, UK and Canada have strict regulations regarding license plate production, while in T&T persons are able to simply walk in to certain businesses and purchase real or illegal plates.

He adds that if legislation is required it should be brought to the table for parliamentarians to discuss.

He adds that if it makes sense, does not unnecessarily infringe citizens’ rights, and helps with crime, there is no reason why Parliament will not support it.
