Cyclone Dana uprooted trees, snapped powerlines and inundated some areas of India, but no injuries or deaths have been reported.
The cyclone, described as severe, hit the east coast of India by making landfall in Odisha with winds of up to 120 km/h.
It eventually weakened into a cyclonic storm and is expected to further weaken into a depression.
Odisha closed schools, suspended flights to and from its capital city of Bhubaneswar, and evacuated more than half a million people in anticipation of the storm.
Heavy rainfall also affected parts West Bengal and, accompanied by a surge in the sea water, left low lying areas inundated.
Reuters says severe storms hit the coasts of India and Bangladesh during the cyclone season from April to December each year.
