MP: Reform domestic violence laws; establish a Domestic Violence Bureau

An MP is calling for reform of T&T’s Domestic Violence Act and the establishment of a Domestic Violence Bureau.

The request follows the murders of Tara Ramsaroop and her one-year-old daughter last week, and Laura Sankar over the weekend.

Princes Town MP Barry Padarath says current law must be reworked to give spouses a greater level of protection.

Furthermore, he believes a bureau must be put in place with responsibility for investigating domestic violence, sensitizing the public on avenues for protection and giving anonymous information to authorities.

He says such a bureau would be strengthened by the family court and would be able to hold officers to account, in light of claims that police sometimes do not enforce protection orders.

MP Padarath believes the time has come for drastic action.
