HDC resumes collection drive

The HDC says it has resumed its Collection Drive in a bid to recoup over $3 million from errant tenants in eight Housing Developments across the country.

As of Friday, October 11, 2024, it says a total of 13 persons were evicted from units at Greenvale Park, La Horquetta; Cashew Gardens, Chaguanas; Oasis Greens, Chaguanas and Cypress Hill, San Fernando.

It also warns that Other Developments identified for evictions are Coconut Grove, Mayaro; Exchange Village, Couva; Harmony Hall, Marabella and Vieux Fort, St. James.

Tenants with outstanding balances are being encouraged to visit the HDC to settle their debts or develop a payment plan.

It says failure to do so will result in the issuing of a Notice to Quit, which informs the tenant they should vacate the premises.

It explains, “If they do not vacate the premises by the stipulated timeframe they are told, in person, they will be evicted. If tenants choose to stay after all attempts have been made to recover funds or establish a payment plan, they are evicted. Following eviction, the HDC processes the unit for reallocation. It is expected that those who are evicted will honour their previous commitments to the Corporation, and settle their arrears. As is the norm, the HDC publishes a list of tenants in the three daily newspapers encouraging persons to contact the Corporation. These names are also published on the HDC’s social media accounts, inclusive of the numbers and email addresses of the HDC’s relevant personnel, for ease of reference. Some people heed the call, while others do not. Those who do not contact the Corporation and are served Notices to Quit will be evicted.”

The HDC also maintains that the exercise has become necessary to recover millions of dollars owed to the Corporation and reclaim affordable units to house those most in need.
