The Australian government has proposed a ban on social media for children.

According to Al Jazeera, there have been concerns about the impact of platforms such as TikTok and Instagram on young people’s physical and mental health.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says, “We’ve committed to introducing legislation before the end of this year for age verification to make sure that we get young people away from this social harm.”

He noted that government is considering a minimum age of between 14 and 16.

Australia’s Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has previously expressed support for banning social media for those under 16 years old.
