An arrest warrant has been issued for the Venezuelan opposition’s former presidential candidate.
According to AP News, this is part of a criminal investigation into the results of July’s election that both incumbent Nicolás Maduro and his challenger, Edmundo González, have claimed to have won.
González is said to have failed to appear on three occasions to answer questions from prosecutors.
Authorities accuse him of various crimes including conspiracy, falsifying documents and usurpation of powers.
Back in July, election officials declared that President Maduro had won a third six-year term in office.
BBC News says the opposition alliance has since published voting data online which it says shows that González had won the election by a huge margin, of more than 30%.
The report adds that it is this data that led to the issuance of the arrest warrant.
