Judiciary on officer’s refusal to comply with screening, firearms policy

The Judiciary is standing by its universal screening policy and position on firearms in court buildings.

This, after an incident on Wednesday morning at the Princes Town Judicial Complex in which a police officer refused to comply.

The Judiciary says all persons, including police officers, must be screened, either by baggage, walk through or handheld scanners.

It adds that since July 2015, court users and police officers have been prohibited from entering with a firearm.

This policy was adopted after an examination of international court security practice, and according to the Judiciary, has been communicated formally to stakeholders, including the Police Commissioner.

It says while it recognizes the role played by police officers in public safety and security, “the Judiciary reserves the right to regulate access to all court premises.”
