200 more Kenyan police officers arrive in Haiti

200 more Kenyan police officers have arrived in Haiti under a United Nations-backed mission aimed at curbing gang violence plaguing the country.

According to Al Jazeera, the new officers take the total number of Kenya officers in the capital of Port-au-Prince to 400.

It adds that more Kenyans are expected to arrive in the coming weeks and months along with police and soldiers from the Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Benin, Chad and Jamaica for a total of 2,500 personnel.

The deployment of the officers was approved by a UN Security Council resolution in October but was delayed by a Kenyan court decision in January that ruled it unconstitutional.

The violence in Port-au-Prince, which includes murder, rape, looting and kidnappings, has affected food security and humanitarian aid access.
