Donald Trump is the official Republican presidential nominee after receiving the votes of enough delegates at the Republican National Convention.
The Associated Press says while Mr Trump has been the presumptive nominee for months, it was the vote of RNC delegates in Milwaukee that made it official this afternoon.
He hit the necessary threshold with votes from his home state of Florida.
At the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee today, Ohio Senator JD Vance was also named as his running mate and vice-president if he returns to the White House.
Mr Vance was once a Trump critic, but has since become one of the candidate’s most trusted defenders on Capitol Hill and in the media.
Today’s event is being held just two days after a shooting and attempted assassination at a rally in Pennsylvania.
A spectator was killed and two others seriously injured.
The gunman, since named as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead by the Secret Service.
