Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has been elected UK Prime Minister, ending 14 years of Conservative government.
According to BBC News, his first speech as PM came after a meeting with King Charles at Buckingham Palace.
Sir Starmer extended appreciation to former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak but noted that the country has “voted decisively for change, for national renewal and return of politics to public service.”
He added that the work begins today and said, “With respect and humility, I invite you all to join this govt of service in the mission of national renewal.”
Mr Sunak said, “I would like to say, first and foremost, I am sorry. I have given this job my all, but you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change. And yours is the only judgment that matters.”
He took responsibility for the landslide election loss.
