A 33-year-old businessman has been charged with fraud after allegedly failing to deliver a vehicle that he was paid to import.

A victim reported that in December 2020, $47,000 was paid via manager’s cheque as down payment for the purchase and importation of a vehicle valued at $97,000.

It was to be delivered in six weeks’ time, however this did not happen and attempts to recover the money proved futile.

Stefon Rabindrunath of Barrackpore was subsequently charged with Fraudulent Conversion in the sum of $47,000.

He was expected to appear before a San Fernando Magistrate today.

The Fraud Squad meanwhile is advising persons wishing to buy a vehicle, to first check with the Ministry of Trade to verify that the agent is authorized to conduct such transactions.
