Six-hitting Jones seals victory for USA in T20 World Cup opener

Aaron Jones smashed 10 sixes in an unbeaten 40-ball 94 as USA beat Canada by 7 wickets in the opening match of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Batting first, Canada made 194/5 with a top score of 61 from Navneet Dhaliwal and 51 from Nicholas Kirton.

USA’s chase began badly with Steven Taylor trapped lbw by Kaleem Sana for a duck after two balls and captain Monak Patel falling just outside the powerplay for 16 – USA 42/2 after 6.3 overs.

But in strode Jones to join forces with Andries Gous – Jones showed off his boundary-clearing skill and Gous played anchor in a 131-run partnership off just 58 balls.

Gous fell for 65 from 46 balls to leave the score at 173/3 but by that time the damage was done, and Jones and former New Zealand international Corey Anderson took USA to 197/3 in 17.4 overs.

Next up – West Indies vs Papua New Guinea at 10:30am in Guyana and Namibia vs Oman at 8:30pm in Barbados.
