Saudi Arabia: At least 1,301 die during Hajj

Saudi Arabia says at least 1,301 people, mostly unauthorized pilgrims, died during Hajj.

According to a report by BBC News, these pilgrims walked long distances in intense heat – Hajj took place during a heatwave with temperatures reaching over 50°C.

SPA – the official Saudi news agency – is quoted as saying more 75% of those who died did not have official permits and walked without adequate shelter, while some were elderly or chronically ill.

Hajj is the annual pilgrimage made by Muslims to the holy city of Mecca and all Muslims who are financially and physically able must complete the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.

About 1.8 million people took part this year.
