WI Women qualify for 2022 WC after qualifiers called off

The ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe has been abandoned following the emergence of the latest COVID-19 variant, Omicron.

The tournament was supposed to be played until December 5th to decide the final three spots in next year’s World Cup in New Zealand.

Now that the qualifier has been called off, those spots have been decided as per the team rankings – this means Bangladesh, Pakistan and West Indies progress to the 2022 World Cup.

Earlier today, two of the three matches scheduled started but the third fixture of the day between West Indies and Sri Lanka could not be staged as a member of the Sri Lanka support staff tested COVID-positive.

ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley said, “We are incredibly disappointed to have to cancel the remainder of this event but with travel restrictions from a number of African countries being imposed at such short notice, there was a serious risk that teams would be unable to return home.”
